About Us
The Stonewall Jackson High School Orchestra program consists of approximately 130 students in grades 9-12 enrolled in 4 levels of ensembles.
Chamber Orchestra
Chamber Orchestra is the select orchestra at SJHS. Students in Chamber audition for a spot during April every year. Membership is open to students in grades 9-12.
Chamber Orchestra presents between 6 and 10 performances a year, and students are required to audition for All County Orchestra. Students are also strongly encouraged to audition for Regional Orchestra and All-Virginia, if eligible.
Chamber has a tradition of superior ratings at District Assessment, and routinely performs grade IV, V, and VI level music.
Sinfonia
Sinfonia is the newest orchestra ensemble at SJHS. It was formed during the 2018-2019 school year. Membership in Sinfonia is open by audition to students in grades 9-12. Auditions take place during April of the previous school year.
Sinfonia presents between 5 and 7 performances a year, and students are encouraged to audition for honors ensembles including All County Orchestra.
Sinfonia typically performs grade III and IV level music.
Gold Orchestra
Gold Orchestra is open to any orchestra student in grades 10-12 with at least 1 year of high school instruction. Students are not required to audition for this ensemble, and are placed in Gold upon completion of Concert Orchestra.
Gold Orchestra presents 4 performances a year, and students are strongly encouraged to attend orchestra performances in which they are not participating.
Gold Orchestra routinely earns superior and excellent ratings at District Assessment, and typically performs grade II, III, and IV level music.
Concert Orchestra
Concert Orchestra is open to first year high school orchestra musicians with middle school experience. Typically this ensemble is comprised of mostly 9th grade students. There is no audition required for membership in this orchestra.
Concert Orchestra presents 4 performances a year, and students are strongly encouraged to attend orchestra performances in which they are not participating.
Concert Orchestra routinely earns superior ratings at District Assessment, and typically performs grade II, III, and IV level music.
